About the Association
The Multimedia Center Led Art, registered as a citizens’ association, began its formal existence in 1999. The association was primarily formed through the activities of the art group “Led Art,” founded and initiated by Nikola Džafo in 1993, during a period of socio-political turmoil that pushed Yugoslavia into war and complete international isolation throughout the 1990s. The idea behind its founding was that engagement in culture and the arts could be one of the ways to survive and not sink into the catastrophic reality of the time.
Within its two long-term projects, “Art Klinika” (2002–2012) and “Šok ZaDruga” (2013–), the Multimedia Center Led Art has been established on the principles of collective community, participatory work, and voluntary engagement in art and culture.
The activities that best define the work of the Multimedia Center Led Art include: caring for the artistic scene in Novi Sad and beyond; supporting and working with young artists; active involvement in changing and improving cultural policy; advocating for all active and participatory forms of cooperation between individuals, formal and informal groups, and institutions with the aim of improving the production, presentation, preservation, and development of the contemporary art scene, primarily in the field of visual arts.
Currently, MMC Led Art carries out its activities within the long-term project “Šok ZaDruga.” Šok ZaDruga reshapes existing institutional and disciplinary frameworks and formulates new, unconventional models of cooperation, “playing” with the modalities of center/periphery, private/public space, non-institutional/institutional, formal/informal.
The association is made up of a large number of formal and informal members, while the main activities are conceptualized, managed, and coordinated by the duty team. What connects all members in the association’s activities is the shared belief that only cooperative solidarity can save the world from catastrophe.
