Association "Reaktor"
About the Association
Citizens' Association "Reaktor" is an organization founded in 2015 that brought together experienced workers in the field of culture and activists in the non-governmental sector with the goal to react to the current problems contemporary society is facing by using art and experimentation in art. Members of Reaktor with extensive work experience have a large number of successfully implemented projects behind them, participation in various events that have already been registered on the city's cultural map Novi Sad, but also on the territory of Serbia.
In the last two years, "Reaktor" has been particularly engaged in working with artists of various profiles, who through their artistic practice are trying to develop new forms of artistic expression, with a special focus on bio and ethical practices.
Currently, Reaktor is engaged in a Creative Europe project “BioAwaking”(2023-2025), as a lead partner along with partners from Slovenia (Kersnikova Institute), Croatia (Universal Research Institute), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Association Greenways) and Serbia (Center for promotion of science). The overall goal of the BioAwaking project is to co-create, adopt, and disseminate environment-friendly practices and artistic productions in the field of bio art through producing and showcasing innovative and engaging formats of bio art installations using art, science, and technology.
Besides the Creative Europe project, Reaktor is actively working on several informal projects with the aim of developing cooperation with various actors on the art and youth scene: artists of the younger and middle generation, producers, promoters and other actors. We are trying to strengthen the Association, which will be ready for cooperation with all cultural institutions and other cultural associations.
The association has independently realized several manifestations:
  • The "Novi Sad Craft Beer Festival" has been held six times so far and was one of the most successful events promoting craft culture;
  • Biofactory - a project supported by the European Capital of Culture - Novi Sad 2022, which dealt with the promotion of bio art. Biofactory represents an artistic production in the form of experiments, where a completely new, biodegradable and sustainable material - SCOBY - is used and processed. The main purpose of this material is to offer alternative solutions in order to preserve the environment, as, for example, to replace plastic as the biggest polluter of the planet, but its great potential in replacing textiles has also been discovered.
  • Passage fest – a young manifestation that promotes specific city localities through the implementation of cultural events thematically related to the said locality,
  • Textile (tactile) newspapers - an inclusive project aimed at improving the accessibility of cultural content for people with disabilities.The project involved the realization of textile objects using the technique of embroidery modeled on daily newspapers from Serbia (Kurir, Večernje novosti, Danas), Hungary (Blikk) and Poland (Super express), thereby problematizing the quantity and quality of (visual) information we get by browsing/reading daily press. He also points to broader social issues, such as the non-inclusivity of daily newspapers and mass culture in general, the inclusiveness of contemporary art, creative contribution through participatory projects. Tactile newspapers created in this project were intended for visually impaired people.
  • BIOCODE - project stems from the successfully implemented BIOFACTORY project, which was supported by the European Capital of Culture - Novi Sad 2022. Based on the results of the project, it was concluded that it is necessary to further work on the education of young people in order to familiarize them more closely with the aspects and possibilities of applying materials of biological origin in art and in science. This is how the idea for the BIOCODE project was born, which would be based on art-scientific and research-educational workshops in cooperation with the Faculty of Science (PMF) within the Department of Biology and Ecology and Mycological laboratory “ProFungi”, the Science Club at the Cultural Center of “Svilara” and the MMC Led Art - gallery “Šok ZaDruga” in Novi Sad.
  • Come in - Inside project is based on the creation of artworks that are primarily accessible to blind and partially sighted groups. As a joint venture of contemporary poets from Novi Sad and contemporary visual artists who are also represented on the local scene, artworks/installations were created whose formats are adapted and oriented towards inclusiveness.
  • BioAwaking - project aiming to co-create, adopt, and disseminate environment-friendly practices and artistic productions in the field of bio art and raise awareness on sustainable development in line with the European Green Deal across Europe, especially Western Balkan. The specific objective is to produce and showcase innovative and engaging formats of bio art installations using art, science, and technology at 2 festivals in Serbia and BiH through cross disciplinary cooperation of 30 artists, scientific researchers, and curators.
